If you had to pick just one — diet, exercise, or sleep — new research says pick sleep.
A January 2026 study in ScienceDaily analyzed sleep data against life expectancy across all 50 US states and found that people who regularly sleep under 7 hours lose more years of life than those who eat poorly or skip exercise.
The more surprising finding: regularity matters more
An Oxford Academic SLEEP paper followed 60,000 people and found that sleep regularity (going to bed at consistent times) predicts premature mortality better than total sleep duration.
"Sleeping 7 hours at different times every day may be worse than sleeping 6 hours at the same time every day."
Why your body 'remembers' bedtime
Gut bacteria have their own circadian rhythm. When your sleep timing is inconsistent, they start producing unhelpful metabolites. This is why shift workers have higher rates of chronic disease even when they log their 7 hours.
What actually works
- Wake up at the same time on weekends and weekdays (within 1 hour)
- Get morning sunlight within 30 minutes of waking — 5-10 minutes is enough
- Cut caffeine after 1pm (caffeine half-life is longer in Asian bodies)
- Reduce blue light one hour before bed
- Bedroom: genuinely dark, genuinely cool, genuinely quiet
Sleep isn't a luxury. It's the cheapest, easiest-to-adjust, most scientifically-backed tool for extending life.
